The Cleveland Browns need an individual that will not only bring instant respect, but one that is or has been a Super Bowl winner. They also need an individual that will change the culture and build a franchise much like the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears. The team needs to look to its roots.
General Manager
Ron Wolf- Former general manager for the Green Bay Packers, also brought in as a consultant during the tumultuous Butch Davis era. Understands football and would build a franchise something Randy Lerner desperately needs. One of a few that would make Browns instant contender and send a message to the league, for the right price he could be lured out of retirement.
Mike Holmgren- Mike Holmgren is in this category because this is the only way he would come to the Browns. He could turn the franchise around in a season or two if he decides to coach. Holmgren would only be lured by an enormous amount of money and of course total control. The Browns are in a position where they need someone to teach them to be a franchise and Holgren has youth.
Bill Parcels- While it’s a complete long shot, there is no question he would make a sudden impact. Parcels would instantly turn this franchise around. The one wild card to land Parcels may be an ownership stake.
Tom Modrak- Buffalo Bills front office. Modrak knows how to draft and has a great eye for free-agent talent. He understands defense and building in the trenches mentality. This would be a promotion for Modrak and an interesting choice. Modrak already drafts players that play in Buffalo the weather is not all that different from Cleveland.
Charlie Casserly- Casserly built the Redskins along with Joe Gibbs. He also laid the foundation for the Houston Texans franchise. Casserly made a great head coaching hire in Gary Kubiak. Casserly could turn the franchise around and could be lured from the broadcast booth. Matt Millen- I know that was mean. But the Browns deserve it.
Head Coach
Russ Grim- Grim is former Pittsburgh Assistant Coach. He is now the assistant head coach for the Arizona Cardinals. If you can’t get Cowher why not get the next best thing. Everything you want in a head coach, a winner, won Super Bowls with the Steelers former player in contention for several positions. Understands the AFC North.
Ron Rivera- Defensive Coordinator San Diego Chargers. Former assistant with the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles both during Super Bowl seasons. Interviewed for several positions last season. Could change the way the AFC North looks at defense.
Mike Martz- Offensive Coordinator San Francisco 49ers. He could turn the Browns from worst to first the quickest simply because he would take the division by surprise. The defenses of the AFC North may not be able to make the adjustments for Martzs’ high-powered offense. Martz could easily turn Derek Andersons’ career around. The Browns would at least be fun to watch.
Steve Mariuchi- He could be lured for the right amount of money would make an interesting choice the Detroit Lions are no ones fault but the Ford Family. Great coach could turn the Afc North on its end Brady Quinn would flourish under his offense as well as Braylon Edwards think Young & Owens. Could be enticed with a GM offer.
Other names to think about:
Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson – very long-shot and in his later years.
Colts Coordinators Tom Moore, Ron Meeks and Jim Caldwell.
The new head coach and general manager needs to change the culture of the franchise. They need to some how remember that there is a tradition, legacy, and mystique about the team. A classic style that deserves to be brought back.
